It’s a busy time on the farm. Lots of prep work and planting going on. As we expand our growing area there is always more to do than we can get done. This week we put in new beds for asparagus. Asparagus is a long growing crop, hopefully ten years in this one bed. We planted year old crowns.
The crowns will grow for a year, and then hopefully, in their 3rd season, we will reap the rewards for our work and patience.
I had never seen an asparagus crown. They are kind of octopus like; very interesting, and sort of dead looking. Glenn dug a 12″ deep trench for me in beautifully prepped raised beds. Then I made small mounds in the trench and spread the asparagus roots out to set on top of the mounds. Then we covered them with soil. We’ll keep covering them with soil as they grow until they grow back above the trench level. FYI, we’ve already had a pretty serious discussion about the straightness of my rows, (or not). No comments, please!
